Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The game uses a single-screen, wraparound space arena viewed from above. The objective is to destroy asteroids and enemies while avoiding collisions and enemy fire.
Players steer, rotate, accelerate, and fire, then clear successive waves for points. Large asteroids break into smaller pieces, increasing the number of targets and the pressure on the player. Progress is based on survival and score rather than a story campaign or character upgrades.
Plan your run
Keep the ship moving and use the arena’s wraparound edges to escape crowded situations. Fire while rotating through open space so that shots cover several approach angles.
Destroy large asteroids before the screen becomes crowded, but watch for the smaller fragments they create. Save any defensive or special option for moments when several enemies converge, if the version provides one.
Before you begin
Use continuous movement instead of remaining stationary in the center of the arena.
Clear dangerous asteroid clusters before focusing on distant targets.
Maelstrom is a fast arcade space shooter developed by Andrew Welch and published by Ambrosia Software. Built around the classic asteroid-blasting formula, it places the player in a maneuverable ship surrounded by drifting rocks, hostile saucers, and escalating danger. The game emphasizes immediate action rather than story, with momentum-based movement, rapid shooting, and survival-focused scoring. Its colorful presentation and energetic play helped establish Maelstrom as a notable independent computer action game of the early 1990s. The DOS release preserves the compact, replayable structure associated with the game, making short sessions easy to start while rewarding skilled movement and accurate fire.
