Some commands require pressing A for Mario or B for Luigi at the correct moment.
How it plays
The adventure is viewed from an overhead perspective during exploration and shifts to a side-on battle view during encounters. Players guide Mario and Luigi through Beanbean Kingdom towns, fields, caves, and fortresses while collecting items and solving puzzles.
In battle, each brother attacks, dodges, and counters independently. Timed button presses strengthen jumps, hammers, and Bros. Attacks. New abilities and equipment are gained through story progress, allowing the pair to reach previously inaccessible areas.
Plan your run
Learn the timing of every attack instead of relying on standard damage commands. Watch enemy animations closely, then use jumps or hammers to evade and counter.
Use Bros. Attacks regularly after practicing them in safe battles. Keep both brothers supplied with healing items, and revisit areas when a new field ability opens an optional path or item.

Editorial context
A humorous action RPG with unusually engaging timing-based battles and excellent cooperation between its two heroes.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is an action role-playing adventure developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance. Mario and Luigi travel to the neighboring Beanbean Kingdom after Princess Peach's voice is stolen by the witch Cackletta. The game combines an overhead exploration view with turn-based battles that rely on timed button presses rather than passive commands. The brothers use individual abilities to cross obstacles, solve environmental puzzles, and perform cooperative attacks. Its colorful humor, expressive animation, and unusually active combat received strong critical praise, and the game became a well-regarded foundation for the later Mario & Luigi series.
