How it plays

How does Mario Kart DS play?

Races use a third-person view from behind the kart. Players steer through multi-lap courses, collect item boxes, use items against rivals, and drift around corners to build mini-turbos. Finishing position determines the result and affects progression through the Grand Prix cups.

Modes include Grand Prix, Time Trials, VS, Battle, and mission-based challenges. Grand Prix contains several engine classes and cups, while Battle includes Balloon Battle and Shine Runners. New karts and characters become available through progression and unlock conditions.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Mario Kart DS?

Learn each course's braking points before relying on drifting. Hold a defensive item such as a shell or banana when leading, and use shortcuts only when they save time without sacrificing control.

In Grand Prix, prioritize consistent finishes over risky attacks. In Time Trials, practice drift lines, boost timing, and mushroom shortcuts separately; small improvements across every corner usually matter more than one dramatic shortcut.
