How it plays

How does Master of Magic play?

The main view is a top-down, tile-based strategic map. Players explore continents, found and manage cities, improve production, research spells, recruit units, negotiate with rival wizards, and attack neutral or enemy settlements. Two linked planes, Arcanus and Myrror, provide different terrain, resources, and strategic routes.

Combat switches to a separate tactical battlefield. Units move, attack, defend, cast abilities, and use ranged or magical attacks according to their statistics and special traits. Campaign progression comes from expanding an empire, acquiring heroes and rare units, researching increasingly powerful spells, and pursuing military or magical victory conditions.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Master of Magic?

Choose a focused spellbook and retort combination instead of spreading research across unrelated strengths. Early expansion is important, but protect new cities with walls, garrisons, and units suited to local terrain.

Scout both planes and prioritize nodes, valuable terrain, and narrow passages. In combat, use terrain and ranged attacks carefully; powerful units are often more effective when supported by enchantments, healing, or control spells than when sent forward alone.

  • Keep unrest under control before maximizing production.
  • Build a balanced army so flying, ranged, magical, and melee threats can all be answered.
  • Treat rare summons and heroes as strategic assets rather than expendable troops.
