How it plays
The main view is a top-down, tile-based strategic map. Players explore continents, found and manage cities, improve production, research spells, recruit units, negotiate with rival wizards, and attack neutral or enemy settlements. Two linked planes, Arcanus and Myrror, provide different terrain, resources, and strategic routes.
Combat switches to a separate tactical battlefield. Units move, attack, defend, cast abilities, and use ranged or magical attacks according to their statistics and special traits. Campaign progression comes from expanding an empire, acquiring heroes and rare units, researching increasingly powerful spells, and pursuing military or magical victory conditions.
Plan your run
Choose a focused spellbook and retort combination instead of spreading research across unrelated strengths. Early expansion is important, but protect new cities with walls, garrisons, and units suited to local terrain.
Scout both planes and prioritize nodes, valuable terrain, and narrow passages. In combat, use terrain and ranged attacks carefully; powerful units are often more effective when supported by enchantments, healing, or control spells than when sent forward alone.
Before you begin
Save before diplomacy, exploration of dangerous sites, and major battles.
Check unit abilities and resistances before committing to a tactical attack.
Maintain a reserve of gold and food when founding several cities quickly.
Master of Magic is a turn-based 4X fantasy strategy game developed by SimTex and published by MicroProse for DOS. The player becomes a wizard competing to control the worlds of Arcanus and Myrror through settlement, spell research, diplomacy, and conquest. Its play style combines a Civilization-like strategic layer with separate tactical battles involving summoned creatures, heroes, and conventional armies. The game is notable for its broad spell system, multiple magic realms, customizable wizard creation, and large unit roster. Its interface and balance can feel dated, but its strategic variety and open-ended campaigns earned it a strong historical reputation among computer strategy players. It is widely regarded as an influential classic of fantasy 4X design.
