Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The main view is a turn-based galactic map. Players scout star systems, establish colonies, assign population to food, industry, or research, build improvements and ships, and choose technologies from branching research fields.
Fleets move between systems and can trigger tactical battles. Combat uses a top-down battle grid where ships maneuver, spend action points, fire weapons, launch fighters or missiles, and use special systems. Victory can come through conquest, elimination of rival empires, diplomatic conditions, or researching and confronting the Antares.
Plan your run
Early expansion is usually more important than building an oversized fleet immediately. Scout efficiently, secure productive systems, and keep colony development balanced so new worlds can contribute instead of draining the treasury.
Choose research that supports your empire design, protect vulnerable colonies with suitable defenses, and refit ships as better technologies arrive. Diplomacy can buy time, but monitor rivals closely and prepare for the Antares endgame rather than treating it as a distant problem.
Before you begin
Prioritize scouting and nearby habitable systems before committing to expensive military projects.
Use population assignments deliberately; food, production, and research demands change from turn to turn.
Design ships around a clear role and update older designs when major weapon or defense technologies become available.
Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares is a turn-based 4X strategy game developed by SimTex and published by MicroProse for DOS. Players lead a custom spacefaring civilization, expand across a procedurally arranged galaxy, research technologies, manage colonies, and compete with rival empires. Its play style combines high-level empire administration with tactical combat when fleets meet. The game also adds a deeper race-design system, customizable ships, diplomacy, and a dangerous endgame conflict involving the Antares. It was widely praised for its breadth, replayability, approachable interface, and satisfying mix of strategic and tactical decisions, and it became one of the best-known classic computer strategy games.
