Gideon Braver Vandenburg
The player character, a dispossessed MechWarrior who becomes a mercenary while pursuing the BattleMech and enemies connected to his family’s destruction.
How it plays
The game is played from inside a BattleMech cockpit. Players travel between worlds, accept contracts, select a machine and weapon loadout, then fight enemy BattleMechs across mission environments.
Combat requires turning the chassis, managing throttle, aiming weapons, monitoring heat, and targeting specific enemy body sections. Between missions, money and salvaged equipment support repairs, refits, and the purchase of better machines. The campaign is time-limited and combines a main revenge objective with optional mercenary work.

MechWarrior is a first-person BattleMech combat and role-playing game developed by Dynamix and published by Activision. Set in the BattleTech universe, it follows the mercenary Gideon Braver Vandenburg as he seeks to recover his family’s stolen BattleMech and avenge their deaths. The game combines cockpit combat with travel, contract selection, finances, equipment management, and gradual access to more powerful machines. Battles emphasize aiming, heat control, armor placement, and subsystem damage rather than simple run-and-gun action. Its open-ended mercenary structure was unusual for its time, and the game became an important early computer adaptation of BattleTech, although its interface and demanding campaign systems can feel opaque to modern players.
