How it plays
Players guide Lan through towns, buildings, and network areas from a top-down perspective. MegaMan.EXE investigates incidents, fights viruses, and advances the story by opening paths and completing missions.
Battles take place on a six-by-three grid. MegaMan moves around attacks, uses the MegaBuster, and selects Battle Chips from a folder. Chips are drawn into a Custom Screen, and compatible chips can be selected together under the game's rules.
The main campaign adds liberation missions, in which Lan's team frees areas of a strategic map within a limited number of turns. New chips, Navi allies, upgrades, and optional areas expand combat options as the story progresses.
Plan your run
Build folders around a small number of compatible chip codes so the Custom Screen produces usable turns consistently. Keep defensive chips available while learning enemy patterns, especially during liberation missions.
Use allied Navis to exploit their different movement and attack styles. Plan each liberation turn before acting, because wasted turns can reduce the area you can clear and make later encounters more difficult.
Upgrade the MegaBuster and MegaMan's programs when possible, but do not neglect folder improvements. A balanced folder with reliable damage, recovery, and area control is safer than one filled only with powerful situational chips.

Mega Man Battle Network 5: Team ProtoMan is a science-fiction action RPG developed and published by Capcom for the Game Boy Advance. Players follow Lan Hikari and MegaMan.EXE as they assemble a Net battalion to fight Nebula, a criminal organization using Dark Chips and mind control. Exploration takes place across real-world locations and their cyberspace counterparts, while battles combine real-time movement with a customizable Battle Chip folder. The game was well received for its strategic combat, team-based liberation missions, and expanded role for ProtoMan, although some critics found the repeated liberation structure slower than earlier entries. This version is one of two campaign variants, with Team Colonel offering different allies and story scenes.
