Metal Mutant
A programmable transforming cybernetic organism and the player character. Its humanoid, dinosaur, and amoeboid forms provide different ways to move, fight, and overcome obstacles.
How it plays
Metal Mutant uses a side-view perspective across connected areas filled with platforms, enemies, barriers, and hazards. The main objective is to explore the world, survive encounters, find a route forward, and defeat or bypass obstacles using the appropriate form.
The protagonist can transform between a humanoid robot, a dinosaur-like combat form, and an amoeboid form. Each form has distinct attacks and movement capabilities, so progression depends on switching forms at the right time rather than relying on one universal attack. The game is structured around exploration and screen-by-screen advancement rather than conventional experience levels or equipment upgrades.
Plan your run
Learn the purpose of each form before entering unfamiliar areas. The humanoid form is useful for general movement and interaction, the dinosaur form is suited to direct combat, and the amoeboid form can handle situations that the other bodies cannot.
Advance carefully and observe enemy patterns, hazards, and possible routes before committing to a transformation. Conserve safe opportunities for changing form, since choosing the wrong body can leave Metal Mutant unable to cross an obstacle or survive an encounter.
Meet the cast
A programmable transforming cybernetic organism and the player character. Its humanoid, dinosaur, and amoeboid forms provide different ways to move, fight, and overcome obstacles.
Before you begin
Change forms to match the obstacle rather than treating transformations as simple power-ups.
Explore methodically; a blocked route may require returning in a different form.
Avoid rushing into enemies or hazards while learning each area’s timing.
Metal Mutant is a science-fiction action-adventure game developed and published by Silmarils for DOS in 1991. The player controls a transforming cybernetic organism sent to investigate a dangerous technological world and confront the forces threatening it. Exploration takes place across horizontally scrolling environments that combine platforming, combat, environmental hazards, and problem solving. Its defining feature is the ability to switch between three forms, each with different movement and combat abilities. The game was technically ambitious for its period and attracted attention for its visual presentation and unusual transformation system, although contemporary opinions were mixed because of its demanding controls, harsh difficulty, and sometimes unclear progression.
