How it plays

How does Myst play?

Myst uses a first-person perspective with fixed locations and point-and-click navigation. The main objective is to explore Myst Island, discover linking books, visit different Ages, and solve interconnected mechanical and logic puzzles.

The player examines objects, collects clues, reads journals, operates switches, and records information needed for later steps. There is no conventional combat system, character leveling, or inventory-driven progression; advancement comes from understanding each environment and applying discovered information correctly.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Myst?

Examine every object and write down numbers, symbols, sounds, and machine settings. Many puzzles provide their clues in one location but require their solution somewhere else.

Explore the Ages methodically and avoid changing mechanisms at random. Keep multiple save files before major decisions, and revisit earlier areas whenever a newly discovered clue explains an old device.
