How it plays
Myst uses a first-person, point-and-click perspective. The main objective is to investigate Myst Island, activate its transportation system, and reach connected Ages by discovering how each mechanism works.
The player clicks through static rendered views, examines objects, operates switches and devices, reads books, and records clues. There is no conventional combat system, inventory management is minimal, and progression is almost entirely puzzle-based. Several routes can be explored in different orders, while the ending depends on interpreting the evidence surrounding Atrus's family.
Plan your run
Inspect every accessible object and record symbols, sounds, numbers, and machine settings. Many solutions are presented indirectly through books, architecture, and environmental details.
Explore both major Ages before committing to a final choice. If a device appears inactive, search nearby rooms and linked areas for its power source or operating sequence; Myst often separates a clue from the mechanism it explains.

Myst is a first-person graphic adventure developed by Cyan and published for DOS by Broderbund in 1994. The player arrives on a deserted island after entering a mysterious linking book, then explores its machines, landmarks, and gateways to other Ages. Progress depends on careful observation, written notes, and solving self-contained mechanical and environmental puzzles rather than fighting or collecting conventional equipment. Its quiet presentation, pre-rendered scenes, atmospheric sound, and non-linear investigation made it one of the most influential computer adventures of its era. Critics and players widely praised its sense of immersion and accessible interface, although some found the puzzles demanding and the movement deliberately slow. The DOS edition preserves the core experience in a mouse-driven format.
