How it plays
The player explores a randomly generated, tile-based dungeon from a top-down perspective. The main objective is to descend to the bottom, obtain the Amulet of Yendor, and return with it while surviving monsters, traps, hunger, curses, and other hazards.
Players choose a role and race, move one turn at a time, fight or avoid monsters, search for hidden features, collect equipment, eat food, read scrolls, drink potions, and use magical or ordinary tools. Dungeon levels contain rooms, corridors, shops, altars, stairs, and special areas. Character attributes, experience, equipment, identification, and luck develop during the run, but death normally ends that character permanently.
Plan your run
Treat every action as potentially dangerous: the game advances when you move, wait, search, or use an item. Keep reliable food, identify equipment before trusting it, and avoid fighting when retreat or a doorway gives a safer option.
Meet the cast

A major antagonist associated with the Amulet of Yendor and the late-game dungeon.
Before you begin
Read the in-game help and inspect the status line frequently; hunger, encumbrance, equipment, and conditions can decide a run.
Experiment carefully with unidentified objects, preferably when a mistake cannot immediately place the character in danger.
Editorial context
A famously deep and emergent roguelike with exceptional replay value, but its keyboard interface, hidden mechanics, and permanent death create a steep learning curve.
NetHack is a turn-based roguelike role-playing game developed by the NetHack DevTeam and released for DOS in 1987. It places the player in the role of an adventurer descending through a procedurally generated dungeon to recover the Amulet of Yendor. Exploration, combat, hunger, identification, and careful use of equipment are equally important. The game is presented primarily through text and keyboard commands rather than animated graphics. Every move advances the world, so ordinary actions can be as consequential as battles. NetHack became historically influential for its depth, simulation-like interactions, hidden information, and unforgiving permanent-death structure. Its enormous number of possibilities and discoveries has earned it lasting acclaim among roguelike players, although its interface and difficulty can be demanding for newcomers.
