Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
Players take turns selecting a leader, choosing targets, and launching missiles or other weapons. The objective is to destroy opposing populations while preserving enough of one's own population to remain in the game. Weapons, retaliation, and political reactions create an escalating sequence of attacks.
The game is structured around repeated turns rather than a conventional campaign. It supports play against computer-controlled opponents and local multiplayer, with outcomes affected by available weapons and chance. The rules are intentionally simple, emphasizing timing, retaliation, and the consequences of escalation.
Plan your run
Do not launch every weapon immediately. Keep enough of your arsenal to retaliate after an opponent attacks, and consider whether a target is already weakened before spending a valuable missile.
Watch the overall exchange rather than focusing on one rival. A poorly timed attack can cause several leaders to turn against you, while patience may let other opponents damage one another first. Because chance affects results, preserve options and avoid relying on a single attack.
Before you begin
Retain a reserve of weapons for retaliation and avoid wasting attacks on targets that are already close to defeat.
Nuclear War is a turn-based strategy and political simulation game developed and published by New World Computing for DOS in 1989. It presents a darkly comic confrontation between caricatured world leaders who threaten one another with nuclear weapons. Each player manages a superpower, builds an arsenal, and tries to survive the escalating exchange. The game is deliberately satirical rather than realistic, using simple rules and exaggerated presentation to criticize nuclear brinkmanship. Its unusual theme, multiplayer focus, and grim humor made it a distinctive release among late-1980s computer strategy games, although its randomness and limited diplomacy reduce its appeal for players seeking a deep simulation.
