How it plays
The action takes place on one fixed screen viewed from the side. A gun positioned near the bottom aims upward, while paratroopers descend from aircraft and must be shot before they land.
There are no campaign maps or character upgrades. Progress is represented by surviving successive waves and achieving a higher score. The main challenge comes from choosing targets quickly, correcting the gun's angle, and avoiding wasted shots as the number and timing of airborne threats increase.
Plan your run
Prioritize paratroopers that are closest to the ground, but do not ignore new targets entering from the sides. Sweep the gun methodically rather than making large, repeated movements.
Before you begin
Keep scanning both sides of the screen instead of focusing on one falling target.
Use deliberate aim corrections and avoid rapid, unnecessary firing.
Treat every landing threat as urgent once several paratroopers are airborne.
Paratrooper is a minimalist DOS arcade action game created by Greg Kuperberg and released in 1982. The player operates a ground-based gun and attempts to stop airborne paratroopers before they reach the ground and overwhelm the defensive position. Its single-screen presentation, immediate controls, and escalating enemy pressure place it firmly in the early home-computer arcade tradition. The game emphasizes timing and accuracy rather than exploration or story. Players track descending targets, rotate the gun, and fire at the right moment while managing threats arriving from above. Paratrooper is historically notable as an early DOS game with a simple but recognizable arcade structure, although its reception has generally centered on its influential simplicity and challenge rather than on audiovisual production values.
