How it plays

How does Pokémon SoulSilver Version play?

The adventure is viewed from an overhead perspective. Players explore towns, routes, caves, forests, and buildings while speaking with characters, finding items, solving environmental obstacles, and catching wild Pokémon.

Battles are turn-based. A party of up to six Pokémon uses moves, items, switching, and abilities to defeat opponents. Progress comes from earning eight Johto Gym Badges, developing a balanced team, and advancing through the story.

After the main Johto challenge, the game opens the Kanto region and additional Gym battles. Optional activities include contests, the Battle Frontier, rematches, breeding, fishing, and completing the National Pokédex.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Pokémon SoulSilver Version?

Build a team with varied types and reliable status or field moves rather than relying on one strong Pokémon.

  • Keep several Pokémon near the current level range and carry healing items.
  • Use type advantages, especially against Gym Leaders and the Elite Four.
  • Explore thoroughly for hidden items, optional routes, and encounters that expand team options.
  • Save before legendary encounters and use status effects to improve capture odds.

In the post-game, revisit earlier areas, train for Kanto Gym rematches, and prepare specialized teams for the Battle Frontier.

Editorial context

What do players highlight?

A highly regarded remake with a large adventure, strong exploration, and substantial post-game content.

The slower battle animations and limited early-game type variety can feel dated to some players.
