How it plays
The player explores Kanto from an overhead perspective, moving through towns, routes, caves, forests, and buildings. The main objectives are to defeat Gym Leaders, earn eight Badges, challenge the Pokémon League, and complete the Pokédex.
Wild Pokémon are encountered in grass, caves, and water, while trainers initiate battles when approached or spotted. Battles are turn-based: the player selects moves, uses items, switches Pokémon, or attempts to catch wild Pokémon. Experience raises levels and can trigger evolution. Trading and battling with other players require compatible link connections.
Plan your run
Build a balanced team with several different types rather than relying on one powerful Pokémon. Keep levels reasonably close together, carry healing items, and pay attention to type advantages during Gym and rival battles.
Explore optional routes and caves, talk to residents, and return to earlier areas after obtaining new field moves. Save before important battles, rare encounters, and story events. The post-game Sevii Islands provide additional areas and Pokémon after the main story.

Pokémon FireRed Version is a role-playing adventure game developed by Game Freak for the Game Boy Advance. It remakes Pokémon Red Version, sending the player across the Kanto region to catch, train, and battle Pokémon while challenging eight Gym Leaders. The turn-based battle system supports teams of up to six Pokémon, each with different types, statistics, abilities, and moves. The game combines exploration, collection, trading, and optional post-game content. Its updated graphics, expanded features, and link connectivity were well received, and it became one of the most popular Pokémon releases on the Game Boy Advance.
