How it plays

How does Pokémon FireRed play?

The game uses a top-down perspective for exploration and a turn-based battle screen for encounters. The player chooses a starter Pokémon, explores towns, routes, caves, and buildings, and works toward eight Gym Badges.

Wild Pokémon can be weakened and caught, then trained through battles and evolution. Battles use four-move selections, type advantages, status effects, items, and switching. After earning the badges, the player challenges the Elite Four and Champion. The Sevii Islands and additional events open during and after the main story.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Pokémon FireRed?

Build a balanced team with varied types rather than relying on one over-leveled Pokémon. Keep a strong answer to common weaknesses such as Water, Electric, Ground, and Psychic attacks.

Carry healing items and status cures before long caves and Gym battles. Catching a Pokémon with useful field moves can reduce travel time, but plan move assignments carefully because many field moves occupy permanent move slots.

Train evenly before the Elite Four, save before important battles, and use held items and status effects when direct damage is unreliable.
