The game uses a top-down exploration perspective. The player travels between towns and routes, speaks with characters, collects items, encounters wild Pokémon, and challenges trainers.

Battles are turn-based. The player selects moves, uses items, switches Pokémon, or attempts to flee when allowed. Progress comes from winning battles, gaining experience, developing a balanced party, and advancing through the story and available areas.

Build a team with complementary types and keep several Pokémon near the same level so that one unfavorable matchup does not decide a battle.

Carry healing items, read move descriptions carefully, and revisit earlier areas when a new ability or story event opens an otherwise inaccessible path. Save before major battles and important choices.
