How it plays

How does Pokémon LeafGreen Version play?

The game uses a top-down perspective for exploration and a turn-based perspective during Pokémon battles. The main objective is to earn eight Gym Badges, defeat the Elite Four and Champion, and complete the Pokédex by finding, catching, evolving, and trading Pokémon.

Players travel through towns, routes, caves, forests, and the ocean. Wild encounters and Trainer battles provide experience, while evolution, new moves, held items, and type matchups shape progression. Optional post-game content opens the Sevii Islands and additional Pokémon encounters after the main story.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Pokémon LeafGreen Version?

Build a balanced team with different types and keep several Pokémon at comparable levels. Status moves, resistances, and reliable healing items are often more important than using only the strongest attacks.

Explore thoroughly and talk to non-player characters, since key items, optional battles, and useful moves are frequently found away from the main path. Save before important battles, rare encounters, and legendary Pokémon.

After earning the seventh Gym Badge, prepare for the Elite Four by covering their major weaknesses and carrying healing items. The Sevii Islands provide useful training and additional story content after the credits.
