How it plays
The game uses a top-down perspective. The player explores towns, routes, caves, and other areas while collecting Pokémon, finding items, solving environmental obstacles, and progressing through the story.
Battles are turn-based. The player selects moves, uses items, switches Pokémon, or attempts to capture wild Pokémon. Gym victories grant badges and unlock progression, while experience levels, evolution, move learning, and type matchups shape team development.
The main adventure leads through eight Gyms, the Elite Four, and the Champion battle. Link Cable features support trading and battling, while the Sevii Islands provide optional and postgame content.
Plan your run
Build a balanced team with different types rather than relying on one powerful Pokémon. Keep several Pokémon near the same level so that a single knockout does not decide difficult battles.
Use status moves, type advantages, and held or carried healing items thoughtfully. Save before major battles and before attempting to catch rare or one-time Pokémon.
Talk to non-player characters and revisit earlier areas after gaining new abilities. The Sevii Islands and postgame battles reward exploration after the main story.
