The game uses a top-down perspective for exploration and a menu-driven, turn-based perspective for battles. The main objective is to collect Gym Badges, defeat the Elite Four and Champion, and complete the Pokédex by encountering and obtaining Pokémon.
Players explore routes, towns, caves, and other areas; catch wild Pokémon; manage party members; use items and HMs; and battle Trainers. Experience points raise levels, while evolution, moves, held items, and type matchups shape team progression. Trading and battles with other compatible Pokémon games are available through link features.
