How it plays

How does Pokémon Polished Crystal play?

The game uses a top-down perspective for exploration and a turn-based battle system for encounters with wild Pokémon and opposing Trainers. The main objective is to collect Gym Badges, develop a balanced party, and progress through Johto’s story before taking on the Kanto portion and later challenges.

Players travel through towns, routes, caves, and buildings, catch and train Pokémon, manage moves and items, solve environmental obstacles, and battle rival and villain characters. Progress depends on exploration, badge-based field abilities, level growth, evolution, and access to additional areas.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Pokémon Polished Crystal?

Build a party with varied types rather than relying on one powerful Pokémon. Keep several Pokémon near the same level, because Gym specialists and later opponents can punish narrow teams.

Explore routes thoroughly and save before major battles. Use status moves, held items, and type advantages deliberately; healing between battles is especially important during long caves and endgame areas.
