How it plays
The game is viewed from an overhead perspective. Players travel through towns, routes, caves, forests, and other mission areas while investigating incidents and completing requests for the Ranger Union.
To capture a Pokémon, the player draws continuous loops around it with the stylus without letting the line break or run out of Styler energy. Captured Pokémon can provide field moves such as cutting, burning, or smashing obstacles. Story missions unlock new locations and stronger support options, while boss encounters require careful movement and repeated looping.
Plan your run
Keep the stylus moving in smooth, compact loops and watch the Styler gauge rather than making large circles. Clear nearby hazards and identify useful field moves before entering a difficult mission.
Against aggressive Pokémon, begin looping after an attack finishes and use the edges of the screen to create space. Save compatible partner Pokémon for obstacles or encounters that specifically need their field abilities.

In boss encounters, prioritize avoiding attacks over completing a risky extra loop.
Pokémon Ranger is an action role-playing adventure developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS. Instead of weakening Pokémon and placing them in Poké Balls, the player uses the touch screen to draw loops around wild Pokémon and recruit them temporarily as partners. The story follows a new Pokémon Ranger working through missions in the Fiore region, where Pokémon help resolve environmental threats and other disturbances. Its play style combines stylus-based capture, exploration, light puzzle solving, and real-time encounters. Reception was generally positive for its creative use of the DS touch screen, though some players found repeated capture loops demanding.
