How it plays
The game is viewed from an overhead perspective. The player explores routes, towns, caves, ruins, and other locations while accepting story missions and optional Ranger quests.
Wild Pokémon are captured by drawing loops around them with the stylus. Captured Pokémon can assist with obstacles, environmental abilities, and battles, while the player’s partner Pokémon provides a distinct field skill. Progression comes from story events, Ranger Rank increases, new abilities, and access to additional areas.
Plan your run
Use the environment to your advantage before attempting a capture. Clear hazards, block attacks, or use a compatible Pokémon assist when available.
Upgrade the Capture Styler and complete optional quests when possible. Partner Pokémon and field moves can determine whether a mission is easy or difficult, so inspect nearby areas for useful captures before progressing.

Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia is an action role-playing adventure developed by Creatures Inc. for Nintendo DS and published by Nintendo. The player becomes a Pokémon Ranger trainee, investigates disturbances across the Almia region, and temporarily recruits wild Pokémon to help complete missions. Instead of weakening Pokémon with conventional battles, the game uses the DS touch screen for real-time capture loops. Its story combines academy life, exploration, environmental problems, and a criminal threat. The sequel was generally well received for expanding the original Ranger formula, adding more mission variety, a larger selection of partner Pokémon, and a more substantial adventure.
