How it plays

How does Pokémon Ruby Version play?

Players explore Hoenn from a top-down perspective, moving between towns, routes, caves, oceans, and other areas. The main objectives are to earn eight Gym Badges, defeat the Elite Four, and become the Pokémon League Champion.

Random encounters and trainer battles use turn-based commands. Players can capture wild Pokémon, build a six-Pokémon party, manage moves and items, and improve their team through experience and evolution. Progress opens new routes and abilities, while optional Pokémon Contests, fishing, trading, and post-game exploration add variety.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Pokémon Ruby Version?

Build a balanced party with different elemental types and keep several Pokémon near the same level. Exploit type advantages rather than relying on one powerful attacker, and carry healing items for long routes and caves.

Teach field moves carefully, because some are needed for exploration but may be weaker in battle. Visit Pokémon Centers often, use Repels when searching for a specific area, and check each Gym's puzzle and specialty before choosing your lineup.
