Players move through towns, routes, and wild areas from an overhead perspective, encountering wild Pokémon and entering turn-based battles. In combat, you choose moves, switch party members, and use items while exploiting type advantages. Team members gain experience, level up, evolve, and learn new techniques. Parts of the world and story can be approached with some freedom, encouraging exploration, collection, and challenge completion.

Build a team with broad type coverage to avoid too many overlapping weaknesses. Against gyms or tough opponents, check their likely typing and use super-effective moves plus status effects to gain control. Carry healing items and status cures for extended exploration. Progressing through areas while training on the way is usually more efficient than grinding in one place.
