The game uses the classic top-down Pokémon structure with exploration, random encounters, and turn-based battles. Players travel through towns, routes, caves, and gyms to collect badges and advance the story. The roster is limited to 199 Pokémon, encouraging a more focused team composition. EXP.ALL reduces grinding, TMs can be used infinitely, and evolution stones can be bought from shops, making training and evolution much smoother than in the base game.

Build a balanced team around Johto staples and make use of the expanded convenience systems early. Since EXP.ALL is enabled, you can keep the whole party leveled without excessive grinding, but it still helps to prioritize strong coverage moves on your main attackers. Stock up on evolution stones from marts and evolve key Pokémon as soon as their stat boosts matter. Prepare answers to common Gym and Elite Four threats, especially Flying-, Psychic-, and Dragon-type matchups.
