Player character
The protagonist controlled by the player, who explores the region and leads the team.
How it plays
The game uses a classic top-down RPG structure: you move through towns, routes, and caves, trigger events, challenge gyms, and advance the main story. Battles are turn-based and built around the standard four-move system, type matchups, status effects, and item management. Your party gains experience, levels up, and evolves under the usual Pokémon rules. Because the map and encounter pool are modified, exploration and team building feel different from vanilla Emerald.
Plan your run
Build a team with broad type coverage so you are not overly dependent on one attack pattern. Keep healing and status-curing items ready before major fights. Use speed advantage, setup moves, and type advantage to control difficult battles. Explore thoroughly to find useful encounters and strengthen your roster early.

Pokémon X & Y is a fan-made ROM hack based on Pokémon Emerald that adds Kalos-region Pokémon along with altered graphics, story elements, and map layout. It keeps the core loop of catching, training, and battling while reworking the available roster and world structure. As an unofficial project, it is often remembered as a reinterpretation of sixth-generation Pokémon content rather than a literal adaptation of the 3DS games.
