The player party
A group of player-created or imported adventurers whose classes, abilities, equipment, and decisions determine the course of the campaign.
How it plays
The game uses first-person exploration screens, menu-driven interaction, and overhead tactical combat. The party travels through linked areas, investigates locations, talks with non-player characters, manages equipment and spells, and resolves scripted encounters.
Combat is turn-based. Characters can move across a grid, attack with weapons or spells, defend, retreat, and use class abilities. A party can be created or imported from earlier Gold Box adventures. Experience, treasure, magical equipment, and spell preparation support progression through a long, chapter-based campaign.
Plan your run
Build a balanced party with dependable front-line fighters, healing, offensive magic, and more than one character able to handle utility spells.
Save before major encounters and keep several rotating save files. Examine every room, read encounter text carefully, and conserve powerful spells for battles where positioning and enemy abilities make ordinary attacks unreliable.
Protect spellcasters with the front line, use area spells only after checking ally positions, and keep backup equipment because later encounters can punish a party that relies on a single weapon or spell.
Meet the cast
A group of player-created or imported adventurers whose classes, abilities, equipment, and decisions determine the course of the campaign.
The famous Forgotten Realms sage and powerful wizard who is involved in the wider crisis.
The tyrannical god whose forces form a central part of the game's supernatural conflict.
Before you begin
Importing experienced characters from compatible Gold Box adventures can make the opening easier.
Rest and prepare spells before major story battles.
Keep multiple save files because some encounters and choices cannot be safely reversed.
Pools of Darkness is a turn-based computer role-playing game developed and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. for DOS in 1991. It is set in the Forgotten Realms and continues the high-level adventures of a party of veteran heroes facing a threat that reaches beyond the Sword Coast. The game combines party management, tactical combat, exploration, dialogue, and puzzle-solving in the tradition of SSI's Gold Box games. Players create or import a party, make decisions through text-driven encounters, and fight battles on tactical maps. Its unusually epic scale, challenging encounters, and connection to the tabletop AD&D rules earned it a strong historical reputation among classic computer RPGs.
