Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The game uses an overhead perspective on an isometric-style landscape. The main objective is to increase the size and strength of your population until it can defeat the rival population or meet the scenario’s victory condition.
Players raise and lower land, clear space for settlements, encourage followers to reproduce, and use available divine powers. Population growth unlocks stronger abilities and can lead to military actions against the opposing side. A world map provides many scenarios, with later stages generally demanding more efficient terrain management and more deliberate use of powers.
Plan your run
Create broad, connected areas of flat land before concentrating on population growth. A fragmented settlement is harder to expand and usually produces fewer followers than a compact, usable area.
Watch the rival population rather than focusing only on your own. Secure favorable terrain, use divine powers when they create a clear advantage, and avoid spending limited opportunities on small improvements that do not affect expansion or combat.
Before you begin
Flatten and connect land early so settlements have room to grow.
Check the rival population regularly and respond before it gains a decisive advantage.
Reserve powerful divine actions for moments that change the balance of a scenario.
Populous is a real-time strategy and god-game simulation developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts. The player acts as a deity guiding a population across a sequence of inhabited landscapes, shaping terrain and helping followers expand while opposing another civilization. Rather than controlling individual units directly, the game combines landscape manipulation, settlement growth, and supernatural powers. Its open-ended systems were unusual for the late 1980s and helped establish the god-game genre. The DOS version brings the original strategy experience to IBM-compatible computers, with mouse-based interaction and a large set of progressively challenging worlds. Contemporary and later reception has generally praised its originality, scale, and emergent play, while noting that its interface and rules can take time to understand.
