How it plays

How does Ports of Call play?

The main objective is to operate a profitable shipping company. Players select or purchase vessels, choose cargo and destinations, review fuel and operating costs, and send ships on voyages. Success depends on balancing income against maintenance, delays, accidents, and other expenses.

Voyages include interactive sequences rather than being entirely menu driven. The player may steer during departure and arrival, maneuver into port, and respond to events at sea. Progress comes from completing contracts, earning money, and expanding the fleet with more capable ships.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Ports of Call?

Start with conservative routes and avoid committing the company to expenses that cannot be covered by the next contract. Check the distance, cargo value, fuel requirements, and likely operating costs before dispatching a ship.

Practice docking and other real-time sections before taking difficult contracts. A profitable fleet is more useful than a large fleet, so replace or upgrade vessels only when the additional capacity or reliability is likely to improve returns.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Compare cargo revenue with voyage distance and operating costs before accepting a contract.

  2. 2

Keep enough money in reserve for repairs and unexpected events.

  3. 3

Use safer, familiar ports while learning the ship-handling sequences.
