How it plays

How does Quake play?

Quake is played from a first-person perspective. The main objective is to navigate interconnected levels, defeat enemies, collect weapons and ammunition, find keys, and reach the exit. Levels contain secret areas, armor, health, power-ups, traps, and alternate routes.

The campaign is arranged into episodes rather than one continuous map. Players begin with basic weapons and gradually obtain stronger tools such as the grenade launcher, rocket launcher, and lightning gun. Enemies use distinct attacks and behaviors, so movement, positioning, and choosing the right weapon are central to survival. Single-player, cooperative, and deathmatch modes are supported in the DOS release.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Quake?

Conserve powerful ammunition for dangerous enemies and crowded encounters. The rocket launcher is effective but hazardous at close range, so keep space when firing.

Search walls, corners, and unusual ledges for secret areas. Save armor and major power-ups for difficult fights, learn enemy attack patterns, and keep moving instead of trading damage in open spaces.

In multiplayer, use the level layout to control item timing and weapon access. Strafe while firing, avoid predictable routes, and learn where armor and health reappear.
