How it plays
The game uses a first-person room view with text-parser interaction and keyboard or mouse navigation, depending on the DOS version. The main objective is to explore Spielburg, investigate its curse, complete quests, and become a recognized hero.
Players choose a warrior, magic user, or thief, then improve skills through practice and successful actions. Exploration includes forests, caves, town locations, and hazardous encounters. Combat occurs in real time, while many problems can be solved through conversation, inventory use, magic, stealth, or combat. Day and night cycles, character statistics, money, equipment, and class-specific solutions shape progression.
Plan your run
Build a balanced skill set rather than relying on a single statistic. Practice class skills whenever safe, keep healing supplies available, and save before entering dangerous wilderness areas.
Explore the town and wilderness repeatedly. Talk to characters after important events, examine unusual objects, and try class-appropriate solutions; thief, magic-user, and warrior routes often reveal different rewards. Carry enough food and money for extended trips, and return to town regularly to rest and resupply.

Hero's Quest: So You Want to Be a Hero is Sierra On-Line's 1989 fantasy adventure role-playing game for DOS. It combines parser-driven adventure design with character statistics, real-time combat, exploration, and multiple hero classes. The player arrives in the troubled land of Spielburg and seeks fame while dealing with brigands, monsters, curses, and local mysteries. Warrior, magic-user, and thief characters can approach several situations differently, giving the game meaningful replay value. Its humorous writing, flexible puzzle solutions, and unusual blend of genres earned strong historical reception and established the foundation for the Quest for Glory series. The game was later renamed Quest for Glory I to avoid a trademark conflict, while its original Hero's Quest title remains associated with the DOS release.
