The DOS release uses keyboard-driven adventure commands; exact command entry and interface behavior can vary by edition or configuration.
How it plays
The game uses a first-person exploration view with text commands and an adventure interface. The hero investigates locations, talks to characters, collects objects, solves puzzles, and fights enemies in real-time combat.
Spielburg is organized as an explorable wilderness and several settlements, with tasks that can be approached differently by each character class. Training and successful actions improve skills, while completing major quests advances the story and can create a character file for later games.
Plan your run
Build around one or two core skills instead of spreading points evenly. Visit the Guild and practice regularly, because skill checks and combat become more manageable as abilities improve.
Search the wilderness carefully, keep useful objects, and talk to characters more than once. Restoring the valley’s peace requires solving several independent problems; the class you choose changes which solutions are available.
Meet the cast
The player-created adventurer, whose class, statistics, skills, and choices determine how the story is solved.
A merchant and refugee who provides information about the valley and its troubles.
Travelers from Raseir who introduce the hero to local customs and the wider world.
A powerful witch who controls a hut in the wilderness and offers dangerous tasks.
The principal human antagonist behind the brigand threat in Spielburg Valley.
Before you begin
Save before entering dangerous wilderness areas or attempting unfamiliar actions.
Different classes solve some puzzles in different ways, so exploration is valuable even when a solution is not immediately obvious.
Carry healing and stamina-restoring supplies before extended trips.
Quest for Glory: So You Want to Be a Hero is Sierra On-Line’s 1989 fantasy adventure role-playing game for DOS. It combines parser-based adventure design with character statistics, class-specific abilities, exploration, combat, and light simulation elements. The player creates a hero as a Fighter, Magic User, or Thief and travels to the troubled valley of Spielburg. Quests, puzzles, training, and conversations shape the adventure, while the hero’s skills affect available solutions. The game was well received for blending genres, encouraging multiple play styles, and presenting a humorous but substantial fantasy setting. It became the foundation of the long-running Quest for Glory series.
