How it plays

How does Rampart play?

The screen presents a top-down battlefield containing castles, cannon positions, water, and enemy targets. Players fire at opposing forts and ships, then place wall segments to enclose their own structures. A completed enclosure must contain at least one cannon to remain under the player’s control.

After each combat phase, colored wall pieces appear in a timed construction phase. Players may rotate and place pieces, repair damaged walls, and connect sections before the timer expires. The game progresses through successive rounds, with victory depending on surviving, retaining usable castles, and meeting the scenario’s control requirements.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Rampart?

Place walls with the next pieces in mind rather than closing the first enclosure immediately. Small, compact forts are usually easier to repair than sprawling territories.

Destroy enemy cannons and ships early when they threaten a valuable castle. During construction, leave escape routes open until the available pieces make a complete enclosure possible; a poorly sealed wall can cost the entire round.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Keep castles compact so fewer wall pieces are needed for repairs.

  2. 2

Prioritize enemy cannons that can fire on multiple sections of your territory.

  3. 3

Use the construction timer efficiently: place obvious pieces first, then solve difficult gaps.
