How it plays

How does Sargon 4 play?

The game uses a top-down two-dimensional chessboard. The objective is standard checkmate: capture the opposing king through a legal attack while protecting your own king. Players select pieces and enter destinations through the DOS interface.

A complete match can be played against the computer or between two human players. The program supports adjustable playing strength and position setup, allowing users to replay situations or analyze chess ideas. Progression is skill-based rather than campaign-based: improvement comes from learning openings, tactics, and endgame play.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Sargon 4?

Use the lower playing levels to practice opening principles, piece development, king safety, and control of the center. Review tactical mistakes after each game instead of relying only on the final result.

For stronger play, avoid moving the same piece repeatedly in the opening, calculate forcing replies, and simplify only when the resulting endgame is favorable. Position setup is useful for drilling recurring tactical or endgame patterns.
