How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective across several themed zones, each divided into Acts and a boss encounter. Players run, jump, roll, attack enemies, collect Rings, and search for alternate routes while reaching the goal.
Each character changes how levels can be approached. Sonic relies on speed, Tails can fly, Knuckles can glide and climb, and Amy uses her hammer. Progression follows the main zones, while Special Stages and hidden items provide additional objectives.
Plan your run
Keep a reserve of Rings before entering unfamiliar sections, since a single hit normally costs the current Ring total. Learn the position of springs and alternate platforms before attempting a full-speed run.
Choose the character that matches the route. Tails is useful for exploration, Knuckles for vertical paths, and Amy for players who prefer deliberate attacks. At bosses, prioritize observing attack patterns over maintaining speed.

Sonic Advance is a side-scrolling platform game developed by Dimps and published by Sega for the Game Boy Advance. It brings Sonic’s fast platforming style to a portable 2D adventure, with branching routes, collectible Rings, enemies, springs, loops, and large mechanical hazards. Players can choose among Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, each with different movement abilities. The main objective is to cross themed Acts, defeat bosses, and stop Dr. Eggman. The game was well received for its responsive controls, energetic level design, and successful return to classic 2D Sonic gameplay, although some players found its speed-focused stages demanding.
