Laser Cannon
The player's cannon, which moves horizontally along the bottom of the screen and fires one shot at a time.
Documented for this version
DOS control assignments vary by release; no version-specific mapping is provided.
How it plays
The player views the battlefield from the side and controls a cannon along the bottom of a single-screen playfield. Rows of aliens move from side to side, descend when they reach an edge, and fire toward the cannon. The objective is to destroy every alien before the formation reaches the ground or the player loses all lives.
Shields can block some shots but gradually break apart. After one formation is cleared, another begins, normally with greater pressure as fewer aliens remain. A flying saucer may cross the top of the screen and offer a bonus target.
Plan your run
Fire deliberately rather than holding the button continuously if the version limits shots on screen. Clear one side of the formation to create space, then keep moving so enemy fire is less likely to line up with the cannon.
Use shields as temporary cover, not permanent protection. Prioritize aliens near the bottom because their advance is the immediate threat, and take a saucer shot only when it does not leave the cannon exposed.
Meet the cast
The player's cannon, which moves horizontally along the bottom of the screen and fires one shot at a time.
The descending alien enemies arranged in formations. Different rows award different point values.
A flying saucer that crosses the top of the screen and can award a variable bonus when shot.
Defensive barriers that absorb shots from either side but are gradually destroyed.
Before you begin
Stay mobile while watching the lowest surviving aliens.
Use shields early, before the formation becomes fast.
Target the lowest rows first when the invasion accelerates.
Space Invaders is a fixed-screen arcade shoot 'em up in which the player controls a laser cannon defending Earth from descending alien formations. The DOS release adapts the established arcade formula for personal computers, although the exact developer, publisher, and release details vary by version and are not identified here. Play centers on moving horizontally, firing upward, and using shields for temporary protection. Its simple rules, escalating speed, and high-score focus made Space Invaders one of the defining arcade games of its era. The DOS version is best understood as a computer adaptation of that historically important design.
