Roger Wilco
The series' well-meaning janitor and protagonist, promoted to captain of the G.E.N.E.
How it plays
The game uses a first-person point-and-click adventure perspective within static illustrated scenes. Roger explores spacecraft, planets, and other locations, examines objects, talks with characters, collects items, and combines or uses them to solve puzzles.
Progression follows a sequence of story locations and set pieces aboard the G.E.N.E. and elsewhere. The player must investigate clues, manage inventory items, choose suitable dialogue or actions, and occasionally avoid hazards that can kill Roger. Saving often is important because some failures are immediate and the game expects experimentation.
Plan your run
Examine every new scene and use the interface on suspicious objects before leaving. Keep unusual items rather than discarding them, and revisit earlier locations when a new clue or tool changes what can be done.
Save before experiments, conversations, and hazardous-looking sequences. Sierra adventure logic can require a particular item or action order, so record clues and try combining inventory items only when their functions or descriptions suggest a connection.

Space Quest V: The Next Mutation is a comedic science-fiction graphic adventure developed by Dynamix and published by Sierra On-Line for DOS in 1993. It follows Roger Wilco, now promoted to captain of the sanitation vessel G.E.N.E., as he investigates a dangerous biological threat spreading across space. The game combines inventory puzzles, exploration, parody, and Sierra's irreverent writing with a more streamlined interface than the earlier parser-driven entries. Players visit varied planets and ships, solve environmental problems, and interact with a memorable supporting crew. Contemporary and later reception generally regarded it as one of the stronger Space Quest sequels, praising its humor, presentation, and accessible design, although some puzzles and deaths retain the series' trial-and-error tradition.
