Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The player views a strategic galactic map while commanding a starship through a campaign. The main objective is to locate and defeat enemy vessels before the Federation’s resources, time, or ship systems are exhausted.
Combat uses a tactical command interface. Players navigate, scan, fire weapons, manage shields and ship systems, and respond to enemy movements. Missions and encounters vary as the campaign continues, while damage, energy, ammunition, and repairs affect later decisions.
Plan your run
Scan and plan before committing to combat, because blind movement can waste energy and expose the ship to unfavorable encounters.
Conserve power and ammunition, monitor damage frequently, and use movement defensively when enemy fire becomes difficult to absorb. Treat repairs and resupply as strategic necessities rather than optional conveniences.
Before you begin
Learn the command interface before entering a major engagement.
Monitor ship energy, weapon ammunition, shields, and damage after every encounter.
Avoid unnecessary battles when the campaign objective can be reached more safely.
Star Fleet I: The War Begins! is a science-fiction space-combat simulation developed by Cygnus Software and published by Interstel Corporation for DOS. The player commands a Federation starship during a campaign against hostile forces, combining tactical battles with navigation, resource management, and mission decisions. The game is primarily menu- and command-driven rather than action-oriented. Encounters take place across a strategic star map and in tactical ship-to-ship combat, with success depending on careful use of weapons, shields, sensors, and movement. It is an early home-computer interpretation of a starship command simulator and is historically notable for helping establish Interstel’s Star Fleet line, although its text-heavy presentation and demanding interface make it more appealing to patient simulation fans than casual players.
