Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The game uses a simple story-building interface rather than an action-game perspective. Players choose pictures or story elements and place them into an event sequence, then have the computer present the assembled tale.
There is no known combat system, score-based campaign, or conventional level progression. Progress comes from trying different combinations and observing how the selected characters, objects, and actions produce different stories.
Plan your run
Start with a small number of elements and arrange events in a clear beginning-to-end order. This makes it easier to see how each choice changes the story.
Try the same characters with different objects or actions, and reread the result after each change. The program is designed for experimentation rather than optimization.
Story Machine is an educational creative-writing game published by Spinnaker Software for DOS. It presents a set of illustrated scenes, characters, objects, and actions that children can combine into simple stories. Rather than testing reflexes, the program encourages experimentation with sequence, vocabulary, and cause and effect. Play is open-ended: users select ingredients, arrange events, and read the resulting narrative. Its reception is best understood in the context of early home-computer education software, where its accessible interface and emphasis on imagination made it a distinctive classroom and family title. Documentation about the DOS edition is limited, so some version-specific details remain unverified.
