How it plays
Players command allied mecha on grid-based battle maps from a top-down perspective. Missions generally require defeating enemy forces, protecting specified units, reaching objectives, or surviving scripted events.
Units move by terrain and attack with weapons governed by range, energy, ammunition, and morale. Pilots gain experience, while intermission screens allow unit upgrades, equipment decisions, and story progression. The campaign follows a fixed sequence of scenarios with branching circumstances and crossover events.
Plan your run
Prioritize enemy units that can counterattack effectively, and check weapon range before moving fragile pilots into danger. Keep units supplied by monitoring energy and ammunition rather than using their strongest attacks indiscriminately.
Use terrain bonuses and combine attacks from units with complementary ranges. Upgrade a small core of reliable machines first, while preserving morale and support options for bosses and scripted reinforcements.

Super Robot Wars R is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Banpresto for the Game Boy Advance. It combines licensed super robots and real robots from several anime series with an original time-traveling story and Banpresto-created characters. Battles take place on grid-based maps, where players deploy a squadron, exploit terrain and weapon ranges, and manage morale, energy, ammunition, and resources. Between missions, the game uses visual-novel-style conversations and strategic preparation. Its compact presentation and accessible systems made it a notable handheld entry, although its Japanese-only release limited its availability outside Japan.
