How it plays
The game uses a first-person perspective inside the interconnected decks of Citadel Station. The main objectives are to explore each area, recover access information, solve environmental problems, acquire weapons and software, and oppose SHODAN’s plans.
Players move through corridors, laboratories, maintenance areas, and other station sections while fighting robots, mutants, and security systems. Weapons, ammunition, cybernetic hardware, software, and medical resources support progression. Audio logs, e-mails, maps, and readable objects provide context and clues, while difficulty settings adjust parts of the challenge.
Plan your run
Explore methodically and keep written notes about locked doors, key codes, access cards, and unfinished objectives. Audio logs and e-mails often contain essential story information as well as practical clues.
Manage ammunition, medical supplies, and inventory space. Use cyberspace and software tools when they provide access or information, and avoid unnecessary fights when resources are limited. Save before entering unfamiliar sections or attempting difficult environmental puzzles.

System Shock is a first-person science-fiction action RPG developed by LookingGlass Technologies and published by Origin Systems for DOS. The player is an unnamed hacker who awakens aboard Citadel Station after being exploited by the station’s artificial intelligence, SHODAN. Exploration, combat, environmental puzzles, audio logs, and computer-interface interaction form the core experience. Its open-ended station design and emphasis on player discovery distinguish it from more linear shooters of the period. The game was praised for its atmosphere, technical ambition, narrative presentation, and influential combination of role-playing and simulation systems. Its interface and controls can feel demanding today, but its design established ideas that became important to later immersive simulations.
