How it plays
Exploration uses an overhead perspective for towns, fields, and dungeons. The party travels between locations, talks with residents, opens chests, solves environmental obstacles, and follows a time-spanning story.
Battles take place on a side-view field. The player directly controls one character while allies act through configurable tactics. Cless can attack, guard, jump, and use learned artes; other party members provide healing, physical support, or offensive and summoning magic. Experience, equipment, skills, and story events expand the party's capabilities.
Plan your run
Keep Mint protected, because healing access often determines whether a difficult encounter is survivable. Set allied tactics so healers conserve resources and casters avoid wasting their strongest spells on weak enemies.
Upgrade weapons and armor regularly, and use Cless's artes according to enemy position and weakness. Save important healing items before bosses, inspect towns for equipment and side events, and return to earlier areas when a new ability opens a previously inaccessible route.

Tales of Phantasia is a fantasy action role-playing game developed by Namco Tales Studio and published by Namco for Game Boy Advance. It follows Cless Alvein and his companions after their village is destroyed, sending them across time to oppose the sorcerer Dhaos. Unlike turn-based role-playing games, battles use direct side-view movement, attacks, techniques, and spell commands in real time. The GBA version adapts the earlier Super Famicom, PlayStation, and other releases into a portable format. Critics generally praised its story, character writing, music, and battle system, while noting technical compromises and occasional slowdown on the handheld.
