How it plays
The game is viewed from the side. Michelangelo explores a connected fortress, defeats enemies, collects items, and searches for the imprisoned Turtles.
Rescuing a Turtle adds a playable character with a different traversal ability. Switching between the Turtles is central to progression: previously inaccessible passages, walls, gaps, and rooms can be reached with the appropriate character. Exploration also includes boss encounters and repeated visits to earlier areas.
Plan your run
Map the fortress mentally and note passages that cannot yet be entered. When a route seems impossible, continue exploring rather than repeatedly attempting the same jump.
Rescue the other Turtles as soon as possible, then revisit earlier rooms with their abilities. Conserve health before boss encounters, learn enemy patterns, and use the safest character ability for each obstacle.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue is a 1993 Konami action-adventure game for Game Boy. It combines side-scrolling platforming with an interconnected map, making it an early handheld example of the exploration-focused design later associated with Metroidvania games. Michelangelo begins the mission and must search a sprawling fortress to rescue the other Turtles, whose special abilities open new routes. The game emphasizes exploration, combat, backtracking, and careful use of each character rather than straightforward stage-by-stage progression. Contemporary players generally regarded it as an ambitious and capable Game Boy entry, particularly for its structure and character-switching mechanics, although the small screen and limited hardware impose some visual and control limitations.
