How it plays
The view looks directly down a series of connected geometric tubes and webs. The player moves left or right around the outer rim, fires inward along the lanes, and destroys enemies that climb toward the rim. Clearing all active enemies completes a stage, while falling through a portal can advance the player to another level.
Arcade mode is the main campaign, with many progressively harder stages and a limited number of lives. Tempest 2000 introduces power-ups such as Superzapper-style screen clearing, AI droids, jump ability, and enhanced firing. Tempest Plus and traditional modes provide alternate rules and visual treatments.
Plan your run
Prioritize enemies closest to the rim, especially those able to enter or cross lanes quickly. Keep moving around the rim rather than staying in one position, but avoid making uncontrolled full rotations when a threat is approaching.
Save screen-clearing power for crowded situations or dangerous late-stage enemies. Use droids and jump opportunities to reduce pressure, and learn each tube's lane layout so you can anticipate spawn points and safe routes.

Before you begin
Watch the rim as closely as the center; enemies that reach it can end a run quickly.
Use power-ups deliberately instead of spending every screen-clearing charge immediately.
The Jaguar controller's keypad can be used for game and option selections, while the main action uses the controller buttons.
Tempest 2000 is a fast arcade tube shooter developed by Llamasoft and designed by Jeff Minter for the Atari Jaguar. It reworks the structure of Atari's 1981 arcade game Tempest with bright vector-inspired visuals, electronic music, rapid movement, and several new power-ups. The player controls a claw-like shooter on the rim of a geometric web, destroying enemies before they reach the edge. Its main mode combines twitch reflexes with careful target prioritization and repeated attempts to master increasingly difficult stages. The game was widely regarded as one of the Jaguar's strongest releases and became an important showcase for the console's arcade capabilities.
