How it plays

How does Test Drive play?

The game uses a first-person cockpit view from inside the selected sports car. The objective is to drive along a series of mountain-road stages, pass checkpoints, avoid civilian traffic and roadside obstacles, and finish before time runs out or the car is stopped by the police.

Players choose from five licensed cars with different performance characteristics. Steering, acceleration, braking, transmission management, and hazard awareness are central to each run. Routes become more demanding as stages continue, with tighter turns, traffic, and changing road conditions. The DOS release is primarily a single-player driving experience rather than a championship with a large progression system.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Test Drive?

Choose a car whose handling matches your comfort level rather than selecting solely for top speed. Learn each road’s sequence of bends before attempting to maintain maximum speed.

Brake before entering tight turns, leave room for oncoming traffic, and avoid risky overtakes near cliffs or blind corners. Use the transmission carefully if driving manually, and prioritize reaching checkpoints safely over maintaining a perfect pace.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Reduce speed before blind bends and cresting hills.

  2. 2

Watch traffic and roadside hazards instead of focusing only on the speedometer.

  3. 3

Use safer overtaking opportunities on straighter sections.
