Each chapter assigns Chuck a stretch of countryside to cultivate and protect. During the farming phase, the player plants and harvests crops, manages time and money, and handles local objectives before the horde arrives.

The action sections use a top-down perspective. Chuck travels through the map, gathers useful items, and fights or avoids hordes of creatures while protecting farms and settlements. Successful seasons improve Chuck's standing and advance the story, while poor performance can reduce his rewards and progress.

Plan each season around both income and defense. Develop the farm early, but leave enough time and resources to prepare for the horde.

During attacks, protect the most valuable crops and use the terrain to control enemy approaches. Explore when the area is safe, collect useful supplies, and avoid wasting resources on unnecessary fights.
