Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The player views submarine instruments and tactical displays while guiding Red October through mission areas. Objectives involve reaching designated locations, avoiding or defeating hostile vessels, and managing encounters without exhausting the submarine’s resources.
Actions include changing course and speed, using sonar to identify contacts, selecting weapons, and launching torpedoes. Missions emphasize cautious positioning and timing. Progression comes from completing the available scenarios rather than from a persistent character or upgrade system.
Plan your run
Use sonar before committing to an attack, and avoid broadcasting your position unnecessarily. Track contacts by bearing and distance instead of reacting only when a target becomes visible.
Conserve torpedoes and choose a favorable firing angle. When the objective is movement or escape, disengaging and maintaining a safe course is usually more useful than pursuing every contact.
Before you begin
Use sonar information to distinguish threats before firing.
Plan a route that leaves room to evade pursuing vessels.
The Hunt for Red October is a DOS submarine simulation and action game developed by Images Software Ltd. and published by Hi-Tech Expressions in 1990. It is based on Tom Clancy’s novel and the associated film, placing the player in command of the Soviet Typhoon-class submarine Red October during a dangerous defection attempt. The game combines navigation, sonar work, torpedo combat, and mission management rather than presenting a purely arcade-style experience. Its presentation is divided between submarine operations and tactical engagements. Contemporary reception was mixed, with criticism commonly directed at its uneven controls and limited depth, although the licensed premise and submarine setting gave it period interest.
