How it plays

How does The Incredible Machine play?

The game uses a two-dimensional side-on construction view. Players select objects from an inventory, place them in the scene, adjust available settings, and start the simulation to see whether the intended reaction works.

Scenarios generally have a stated goal, such as putting a ball into a container or activating a target. Objects obey simplified physics and may interact through motion, gravity, combustion, cutting, or impact. The DOS release also includes a free-form construction mode for experimenting with devices and building custom puzzles.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play The Incredible Machine?

Read the objective before placing anything, then identify the object that must move or change first.

  • Build the simplest chain possible and leave clear space for moving objects.
  • Test early and watch where timing or collisions fail.
  • Use walls, ramps, ropes, and fans to control direction rather than adding unnecessary machinery.
  • In free construction, save successful experiments before changing the layout.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Pause to study the layout before starting the simulation.

  2. 2

When a chain reaction fails, change one object or position at a time so the cause is clear.
